Causes of brain injury in medical settings

Any time the brain loses oxygen or suffers trauma, the victim is at serious risk of losing physical and mental function. Injuries can be caused by impact, force or lack of oxygen. This last is the most common cause of brain injuries resulting from medical malpractice. Brain injuries caused by oxygen deprivation can stem from surgical error, birth trauma, anesthesia errors, medication errors and other incidents of medical negligence. Untreated strokes and heart attacks can also be a significant cause of brain injury. The most common conditions are cerebral palsy, arising from oxygen deprivation at birth, and hypoxic/anoxic/ischemic brain injury.

Symptoms may be delayed

The symptoms of a brain injury may not be apparent until sometime after the incident that caused the damage. The effects of the impairment may emerge over time and be noticed first by family members and those close to the injured person. Subtle changes in personality and cognitive abilities may be the first sign.
